One of DC’s most popular comic books is being turned into an animated movie.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he Killing Joke comic book turned 27 this year, so it was about time that DC started work on a movie adaptation. Next year, we will learn exactly how the Joker got those scars, as the comic, written in 1988 by Alan Moore, provides a backstory for Batman’s nemesis. Through flashbacks, we learn just how he became the Joker, and in the present day, he tries to torture Commissioner James Gordon into insanity, to prove to Batman that even the sanest of people can lose their minds.

Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) will executive produce The Killing Joke, which is one of three animated films DC will release next year, and the only comic book adaptation; Batman: Bad Blood and Justice League vs. Titans are original concepts. But fans of The Killing Joke comic can still expect something new to look forward to, as according to the DC website, the movie will feature a 15-minute long prologue that helps set up the story.

Although we don’t have much in the way of casting news, Mark Hamill, who has voiced the Joker in various animated features and games since 1992, has tweeted his interest in returning to play the lead role in the film.

The Killing Joke will premiere in 2016.
