The Reverse Flash actor is disappointed in Snyder’s remarks about Gustin, believing he should be part of the DCCU.

[dropcap size=small]D[/dropcap]C fans have recently expressed their frustration with the DC film universe. More frustration came with the studio’s decision to not cast Grant Gustin as The Flash in next year’s Justice League movie. Grant Gustin has been playing Barry Allen on The CW’s : The Flash since 2014. Many fans thought that (despite continuity errors) Gustin would appear as the version of the hero he plays in the show, or at least as a different Barry Allen who would be more in-tune with the DC film universe.

The studio has instead chosen Ezra Miller to play the fastest man alive. This didn’t sit well with Arrow star: Stephen Amell, as he was publicly critical of the decision. But more recently, The Flash co-star Tom Cavanagh has expressed his opinion regarding the casting and Zack Snyder’s direction for the DCFU.  Cavanagh told Nerdist.com:

“Here’s what I’ll say about him not being The Flash. The first thing is that for Zack Snyder to say ‘that’s not really the universe that we’re building,’ it’s excruciating for an actor. Because you’re like, ‘Uh, what about acting?’ He’s a clean-cut guy and winning, yes, because he’s acting that. He’s not Barry Allen. He’s Grant Gustin. He created that thing. If you want [your Flash] to have long hair and be a slacker, believe me, Grant can play that. He makes it look easy and makes everyone think that’s what he is because he’s an incredibly skilled talent. That’s why he has that job. That’s why people like the show. If Zack Snyder were to read him for [The Flash], he would be shocked. It’s crazy for a big-time Hollywood director to say ‘that’s not the universe.’ It’s a huge misstep on his part. If you’re a director, and you’re worth your oats, then you should be able to, given an actor with talent, mold him into what you want, and Grant could do that.”

Cavanagh then goes on admit however, that this might actually be good for Gustin. He argues that it’s good for an actor to branch out and explore other characters instead of playing the same one on a bigger screen. Actors get tired of playing the same role for years, Sean Connery and Daniel Craig both came to despise playing James Bond film after film.  Cavanagh concludes by saying:

“For his first big movie role to be The Flash, I don’t know if that’s the best thing for him. because you’re asking him to do the same thing he’s had years to do, to do the exact same thing in two hours, and it’s in different hands creatively. It’s tricky.”

It’d be great to see the merging of the DC’s film and television universes. Marvel’s film and television universes are one and (despite Agent Carter not being renewed) things are going great for them!
