[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]uper Smash Bros for the Wii U sold nearly 500,000 copies in the United States in its first three days, Nintendo announced today. Those sales figures are enough to dethrone Mario Kart 8 in the same time frame. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby sold a whopping 3 million units in three days.
You know, because sex sells.
Though the numbers are impressive, it really doesn’t come as a surprise, considering Smash is one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises – selling more than 14 million copies in the U.S. alone. What’s perhaps more impressive is where the Wii U now sits compared to this time last year.
The one-two punch of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. has brought the console back from the brink of destruction. Factoring in sales for the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has to be feeling pretty good going into the holiday season. Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president said they’re off to a “great start, but there’s a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans.”
