Steven Spielberg May be Rebooting Back to the Future and Jaws

Because everybody loves a reboot. Psycho, anyone?

[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]teven Spielberg’s DreamWorks has agreed a distribution deal with Universal after parting ways with Disney and blah blah money. The news here is what this could mean. First, Spielberg will have a more hands-on approach to future Jurassic World films. So far, so good. Also he will be back at the studio that developed Back to the Future and Jaws, and Universal wants to reboot them. What?

According to THR, a source close to Universal claims Spielberg is ‘key on potential reboots of other Universal franchises such as Back to the Future and Jaws‘, which means actual discussions as to whether or not these classic pieces of cinema should be rebooted are almost certainly happening.

But it’s not panic stations just yet. Admittedly, Spielberg has thought about a Jaws sequel, claiming that he has a ‘very, very good scene’ for a potential follow-up, but that he has to ‘immediately pull himself back down to Earth’ every time he thinks about it. And then there’s Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis, who has vowed that a sequel/reboot will not happen while he’s alive.

Universal needs permission from a lot of people to get these reboots made, and it sounds like there’s enough resistance, some from Spielberg himself, to keep them from happening. At least during Robert Zemeckis’ lifetime.
