Never in a million years would we have put “Chris Rock” and “Saw reboot” in our mouths within the same sentence, but now that we have actually seen the trailer, we are kind of excited for SPIRAL.
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
It is not entirely clear to me whether or not SPIRAL takes place in the same universe or has any connection to the original films outside of being a reboot with similar elements. Typically, when a franchise is rebooted, it just tries to copy the original with some sprinkled improvements over the top, and while the trailer has us more than intrigued, we have lots of questions.
“I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
– Chris Rock
For instance; in the film’s synopsis, it straight up says “into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past”, so what does that mean? Is it referencing the past in terms of the previous movies’ events or a different past that occupies only SPIRAL’s universe? I guess this is just going to be one of those things that we will have to be patient about and see for ourselves when it comes out this May.
SPIRAL hits theaters on May 15, 2020, and stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger.
