The Rise of Skywalker Trailer: What Does the Red Lightsaber in Rey’s Hands Mean for Her Character?

Sith Rey is a theory that has been around since her introduction in The Force Awakens. So, will that theory actually become a reality? We doubt it...

Nothing. It means nothing.

Rey holding a double-edged red lightsaber doesn’t mean a thing. Likely, it is just a red herring for fans to get hyped about the 9th Star Wars film (as if we needed more of a reason).

Okay, let me start off by discussing something that I have long since hoped for since The Force Awakens…

There were so many recycled elements that while a great film, [TFA] was hardly original.

As we know, The Force Awakens, while a great film on its own, was pretty much a copy/paste of Episode IV. There were so many recycled elements that while a great film, was hardly original. The only real stand-out was a female lead in Daisy Ridley’s Rey as opposed to Mark Hamill’s Luke from A New Hope. That said, The Force Awakens should have pushed the series into a different direction that should have given us a variety of fun twists. Let me explain…

What if, now hear me out, this is just a robot version of Rey? Like, maybe a clone. Totally possible.

What I hoped would happen, was that Rey would end up starting off on the Light Side, then finding out who her parents were (doesn’t matter who, so much as what it did to her mental state of being), and being manipulated and pushed to the Dark Side. Then something happens to make Kylo revert back to Ben Solo and return to the Light Side. This would happen over the course of both TFA and TLJ.

The teaser in the trailer is nothing more than your classic misdirection. After all, what we know about Disney trailers is that if it appears in the teaser, it likely is nothing like this in the actual movie.

There were many elements that set this up, even at the beginning of The Last Jedi, but Rian Johnson messed all that up in favor of the FinnxRose romance, and a bunch of other really horrible story and plot abandonment- in favor of casino chases and PETA acts of liberation for space horses, or whatever.

Now that J.J. Abrams is back at the helm, thank god, could we possibly see Rey head to the Dark Side? Well, no. Probably not. Even involving Palpatine in some manner (Force Ghost?) won’t do it. In fact, if we had to guess, Rey likely stole the Lightsaber from one of the Knights of Ren (they allegedly have a much larger role in this film), or this is a “What If…’ scenario. A ‘Flash Sideways’, if you will, a la LOST (which J.J. Abrams also was behind).
