[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter being acquired in February by Warner Brothers, Minecraft is now another step closer in making its way to the silver screen. Deadline exclusively reported that producer/director Shawn Levy is close to being on board to direct the film adaptation of the popular building game franchise.

Levy is best known for directing all three films in the Night at the Museum franchise, Real Steel, The Internship, and most recently, This is Where I Leave You. He has also produced The Watch, The Rocker, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Warner Bros. had massive success with The LEGO Movie, which led to the studio scooping up another hot commodity in Minecraft. Alongside Jill Messick, Roy Lee is producing the proposed film; he had also co-produced The LEGO Movie, which led to three spin-off films (Ninjago, a LEGO Batman standalone film, and The LEGO Movie 2) being recently announced for the franchise.

The studio heads at Warner Bros. undoubtedly have the same optimism for Minecraft as they do with the LEGO series as the beginning of another profitable franchise with a huge built-in audience. The game has sold roughly 54 million copies total across all platforms, so even if only half of those gamers go to their local theater to see the movie, that will bode well for the future of the potential film series.

No release date or casting announcements have yet been made.
