“I’m Oak – Samson Oak.”
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n the latest Japanese trailer for Pokémon Sun and Moon, we were introduced to a brand new character with a very familiar face:

Given his uncanny likeness to everyone’s favourite Pokémon Scientist, Professor Oak, you could be forgiven for mistaking him as such. In fact, folks were quick to joke that we were witnessing the Alolan “form” of the Professor, and if we’re entirley honest, we can’t blame them for jumping to that conclusion.
But, as it turns out, this Oak – ft. flowing white locks and a laid-back style – is actually Professor Oak’s cousin, Samson Oak. Samson is said to be a native of the Alola region and specialises in researching Alola Pokémon variants.
Samson is clearly Pokémon’s answer to James Bond.
The official Pokémon site revealed his true identity not long after the trailer hit, following much speculation surrounding the Professor’s doppelganger:
“Samson Oak does research on the regional variants that have taken root in the Alola region. He’s a cousin of the Professor Oak—the famous authority on Pokémon research in the Kanto region. The two could practically be twins!”
So it looks as though Samson will be the local authority on the new Pokémon forms, and with his James Bond-esque introduction, he already emits some very cool vibes.
We can’t wait to see what Oak’s cousin will be like when we encounter him in the new region this November.
