Either Kingdom Hearts 3 is leaking hard or fans are just really hungry for news.
It’s probably the latter, but yeah, over the past few weeks KH3 has been subject to a number of leaked screenshots, files, and reports.
Let’s start with the biggest. Last month, a user on ResetEra acquired a handful of screenshots allegedly revealing a Monsters, Inc. world in Kingdom Hearts 3. Additional screenshots of this world have since leaked (via khinsider), and can be found in the gallery below.
The screenshots show Sora, Donald, and Goofy in monster forms, with Sora sporting a very Tigger-esque body, as well as Mike and Sully both as party members. In one screenshot we see the team take on a giant Unversed (Vanitas is back!) on the Scare Floor, and in another, Boo can be seen in the Door Vault of Monsters, Inc.
Upfront, I’ll say that this leak has the most validity of the rest showcased in the article. The sheer number of screenshots as well as the style and details of the graphics would make this a pretty elaborate hoax, but still take this one with a grain of salt.
Next up is a Reddit post apparently listing a good chunk of the worlds that will be in KH3. The “leak” comes from a server file folder that uses abbreviated versions of the movies the worlds will be based on, and here the only new world we haven’t heard about that was listed is Frozen.
Frozen has been widely speculated to be included in KH3 due to how immensely popular the film is, but there really isn’t much to go off of here, so consider this leak as just another rumor.
The most recent rumor to spotlight comes from a snapshot of the February 2018 issue of the Playstation Official Magazine – Australia (via khinsider), where a leaked blurb features KH3, and mentions that the game will “split between the perspectives of best buds Sora and Riku,” and will feature a world based on Fantasia.
The first bit probably means Riku will be a featured playable character in the game. We’ve known for a little while that KH3 will feature another playable character besides Sora, and based off how 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage concludes, it would make sense for it to be Riku.
However, there’s not too much else to go on with this leak, and if anything, this blurb could just be in need of editing before publication. Riku was a playable character in Dream Drop Distance, and there was a Fantasia world, so it’s possible this writer is just confused over a few aspects of the series (which is very easy to do).
So what does this all mean? Well, the Monsters, Inc. leak is very convincing, but the rest seem like eager or confused fans ready to hear more news about KH3.
We hopefully won’t have to wait that long though! The D23 Disney Fan Expo, where the Toy Story world was revealed over the summer, will have an event in Japan this February 10-12. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll finally hear more about the game (like an actual release date).
Kingdom Hearts 3 comes to PS4 and Xbox One this year.
