Liam Robertson, a gaming journalist, was the first to hear of a rumor of the remake.
“What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights Of The Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now. I don’t really know how that game will end up. I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”
If this is true, Bioware has been trying really hard to keep this a secret. But you can’t blame them either. Knights of the Old Republic is one of the greatest Star Wars games ever. But why now?
According to Robertson, Bioware has been working to remake the series not only for a re-release, but also to make the event of KOTOR canon to the current movies. When Disney bought Star Wars, they declared all books/shows/video games irrelevant to the real story, including both KOTOR games. Other than Episodes 1-7 and Rogue One, no other Star Wars story is canon for the time being.
Drew Karpyshyn, writer of the Darth Bane series, said that he was working with Bioware on an unannounced project. Because of his experience writing in the time of The Old Republic, he could very well be a key part to remaking KOTOR.
Nothing official has been announced, but Star Wars Celebration 2017 is today and perhaps something will be announced in Orlando.
