Robert Downey Jr. is back on the case with Jude Law and Guy Ritchie.
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]e haven’t seen Guy Ritchie’s slick adaption of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock since 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have always said they’d happily reprise their roles for a third film if the right script came along, and it seems it may just have.
Collider reported that Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce was already working on a screenplay for the 3rd instalment of Downey’s effortlessly cool Sherlock, and given the obvious affinity Ritchie, Downey and Law have for one another, there’s always been a big chance we’d be seeing more from the trio.
Downey Jr. has pretty much confirmed he’ll be back as Sherlock in a recent interview with Shortlist, where he revealed the film is being discussed, and he is very keen about the prospect of being the seminal detective for a third time:
We’re talking about it right now. NOW. I can’t wait… I know Guy Ritchie loves me as much as I love him – and he damn well should. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. We’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m excited about it.
Of course, Robert is one very busy man at the moment. He’s currently promoting his role as Iron Man in the upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War on a worldwide tour. With Infinity War still up on Downey’s roster, it’s quite a stretch to imagine filming would actually begin this year for the potential Sherlock Holmes 3 project. 2017 seems to be a more realistic bet at this stage.
The fact that all parties are eager to get a third Sherlock project in motion – and are actively talking about it – is a good sign. It all points towards a definite return. The only thing that’s not definite is when we can expect it to come to fruition.
Regardless, we’re happy to hear Downey and Law will be back for another round of Ritchie’s edgy, charming take on Sherlock Holmes.
