Open Road Films has bought the rights to Life on the Road which features David Brent, Ricky Gervais‘ character from the U.K. original The Office.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he British version of The Office may have ended in 2002, but Ricky Gervais’ character David Brent will be getting his own movie. The movie, a mockumentary called Life on the Road, will be written by, directed and star the comedic genius Ricky Gervais. In addition to Open Road Films buying the U.S. rights to the film, Entertainment One and BBC will be co-financing the film.
Life on the Road will follow closely in the footsteps of The Office as a mockumentary. A documentary crew will follow David Brent who is now a traveling salesman that is pursuing his dream of celebrity stardom by self-financing a United Kingdom tour with his band Foregone Conclusion. “David Brent getting a big U.S. theatrical release?” Ricky Gervais said. “He can die happy now.”
Open Road Films seems to be very confident that the British version of The Office would do well in the United States. This is surprising when you take into account that most Americans either believe that The Office is an original United States television series, or that the United States version is much more popular than the United Kingdom version that stars Ricky Gervais.
“Ricky Gervais is a comic genius and we can’t wait to see where he takes this beloved character,” Tom Ortenberg, the CEO of Open Road Films said.
Regardless of these factors, you can be sure that the mockumentary will be hilarious with Ricky Gervais in charge of how the film plays out.
Life on the Road will open in the United Kingdom on Aug. 19, 2016. Open Road Films plans to release the mockumentary in the United States some time afterwards.
