J.J. Abrams claims to be meeting with Valve next week.
[dropcap size=small]D[/dropcap]on’t worry Portal and Half Life fans, your favorite video game turned live action film is still in development. At least they are according to Hollywood film mastermind J.J. Abrams. IGN was able to ask the director a few questions regarding his upcoming projects while he was promoting his latest production, the HBO science fiction/western series Westworld, at the red carpet premier and the director enlightened us with some fresh details on the projects.
“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon”
Despite the fact that both the Portal and Half Life film projects have stalled in the past two years J.J. Abrams seems to have a very excited and opportunistic outlook on both films.
“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”
It is very reassuring to hear that J.J. Abrams is taking both projects seriously and that he wants to get things right. Both video games have an intense and dedicated fan base and it appears that the director wants to be sure that the writers have extensive information about the games.
After all, the last time a video game was turned into a film you could say it turned out to be Doomed from the start.
