Lots of Pokéfans are once more trying to catch ’em all.

It looks like Trainers were itching to go back to Kanto, as the rereleases of the original Pokémon games (Red, Blue, and Yellow), for the 3DS Virtual Console have been a huge success for Nintendo.

It was revealed this week that the combined sales of the three games have set a new first-week record for the Nintendo eShop, a record held previous by Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS.

In a statement issued to Gamespot, Nintendo said:

“With classic graphics and timeless gameplay, these versions of the original Pokémon adventure are proving to be a popular way for fans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series,”

We definitely agree that nostalgia has fueled the success of this rerelease. These games were massive successes when they first launched on the Gameboy, and the 20th anniversary was the perfect time to reintroduce old and new fans to the world of Pokémon.

Plus, Red, Blue, and Yellow were not altered for their Virtual Console reissue (with the exception of trading via wi-fi), meaning old fans could relive that sense of adventure and camaraderie they felt back in the 90’s, Mew glitch and MissingNo included.

And don’t forget, the Pokémon you catch in these games will be Pokémon Bank compatible, meaning you can bring them into the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow are available via the 3DS eShop, and cost $10 each.
