A design document from Rare shows that Perfect Dark could have had a sister game.
[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]Rare’s studio creative director, Gregg Mayles, has revealed a photo via Twitter of a design document for the game Velvet, “There was a planned ‘sister’ title to Perfect Dark called Velvet Dark,” he wrote. The game was supposedly meant to be for N64.[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]hanks to Rare’s studio creative director Gregg Mayles, new evidence shows that a follow-up game for Perfect Dark, titled Velvet, was in the works. Unfortunately, the game never completely made it off the ground and no further details have been given. Take a look at the design document below!
Gregg Mayles, who has been working for the Rare and is the director of the company’s creative department since the departure of the Stamper brothers in 2007, has been sharing several pieces of the company’s history through pictures on Twitter. From the graph paper design for the snake level in Battletoads, to the design document for Blast Corps, the man has shared quite a lot.
However, Gregg Mayles hasn’t shared any further information regarding the design document for Velvet Dark and whether or not the game had an multiplayer mode compared to Perfect Dark. Nonetheless, it isn’t too far-fetched to assume that the game could have had a more complex A.I. than it’s predecessor, and it even may have been targeted for a release on Nintendo’s GameCube instead N64. Sadly, we’ll never know.
Perfect Dark will be re-released in Rare Replay, a collection of thirty past Rare games, for the Xbox One next week.
