The new film will reveal Genie’s origin story.
Looks like we’re returning to Agrabah, and no, it’s not a world in Kingdom Hearts 3.
A new report has confirmed that Disney is making a live-action prequel to Aladdin titled Genies.
As the title suggests, the film will focus on Genie, originally voiced by the late Robin Williams, and reveal how he ended up inside of his lamp. The film will partially take place in “the realm of the Genies,” a location never explored in the original film, which indicates we will probably see more than one wacky, pop-culture-referencing, djinn.
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift will write the film, and Tripp Vinson is being tapped to produce. Vinson has most recently produced the summer hit San Andreas, and the duo Shannon and Swift have worked on horror flicks like the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th.
This report is in line with Disney’s latest trend of “reimaging” their animated classics into live-action films. The most recent example was this year’s Cinderella, and scheduled for next year are The Jungle Book and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Here at Geek Outpost, we’re big fans of the original Aladdin. We can only hope Genies will capture the humor, music, and heart the made the 1992 classic so great.
