Eggsy returns!
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he spy action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service was a sleeper success story that took everyone by surprise with its fast-paced action and generous comedic delivering.
After grossing over $410 million worldwide, a sequel is set to follow, and we now have an official release date from 20th Century Fox – 16 June, 2017. Huzzah!
The spy caper centres around a young street kid by the name of Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, who’s taken in by a secret spy organisation. After being thrown into a competitive training regime, a global threat strikes, and the would-be recruit is in for far more than he bargained for.
Taron Egerton, who brilliantly plays Eggsy, spoke to Collider about the upcoming sequel recently whilst promoting Eddie the Eagle at the Sundance Film Festival with Hugh Jackman.
Egerton highlighted that the film won’t just be set and filmed in the UK this time around, and even teased about a new villain that rivals tech genius Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) from the first film:
With Kingsman, we’re shooting in the summer at present. There’s a script, it’s brilliant. Obviously there’s only so much I can say but what I can say is that we shot [the first] one all in the U.K., that won’t be the case with the next one. It’s a far more international story, we’re going to some incredible places, and we have a villain to rival Samuel L. Jackson—this new one is so brilliantly written I wish I could play it. It’s amazing.
A brilliantly written villain is always something to look forward to! And you can’t help but be intrigued about the ‘international’ bent of the film, and wonder where we’ll see Eggsy next. The possibilities are endless.
Director Matthew Vaughn is set to return for the sequel, but we have no word as to how or if Colin Firth (who played Harry Hart) will be involved. We also don’t know very much about what the sequel’s story will focus on, but the ending of the first left us with a wealth of potential plot-lines.
Here’s to hoping we get some more information soon!
