Kevin Feige Talks Thanos in Guardians Vol. 2, Rebooting Spider-Man and More on Phase Three

The Marvel president hints at what’s to come in phase three.

Captain America: Civil War kicks off phase three of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe this May, and based on the comic book, as well as the latest trailer for the film, we can all take a pretty good guess at what’s going to happen (Avengers are going to fight and stuff).

But no one really knows what to expect after that, as Marvel moves into magic and mysticism, Wakandan royalty, a Norse apocalypse and far corners of the galaxy that may or may not need guarding (apparently there’s a team for that). Also there’s Spider-Man.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has teased us further this week, by hinting at what we can expect from Marvel as it charges into phase three.

First up, Feige talks the ‘big bad’ of phase three, Thanos, and whether he will have any involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

‘I wouldn’t look too hard in that movie for Thanos. The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It will be, ‘Oh, that’s why they’ve been teasing this villain for five years!”

Instead, director James Gunn is bringing in members from different iterations of the Guardians.

‘There’ve been many different incarnations of the Guardians over the years in the comics and we’ll catch a glimpse of additions over the course of the movie.’

So while Guardians steps into unknown territory, Marvel is going back to basics with 2017’s second entry, the untitled Spider-Man reboot.

AGO MPT2

‘It’s going to be as big and spectacular a Spider-Man film as has ever been made, but it’s a Peter Parker story, and has more opportunity to be focused on the story of a 15-year-old kid going to high school.’

We’re back into outer space by the end of 2017, where Thor and the Hulk go up against an apocalypse in Asgard, in a film that will feature hardly any Earth.

‘I don’t think people will read into the Ragnarok title alone [regarding] what the movie’s going to be. It’s going to be, perhaps, as totally different from the two prior Thor movies as Winter Soldier was from the first Captain America.

We want to take it to new places, we’ve got new characters that will show how big we’re swinging on this. And we have a Hulk… The film takes place within the cosmos primarily, which is to say, frankly, very little Earth.’

AGO MPT3

2018’s opening effort, Black Panther, is set back on Earth, but it deals with places and issues we haven’t yet seen from Marvel, and it all leads right into Avengers: Infinity War.

‘This one is important. It’s a big geo-political action adventure that focuses on the family and royal struggle of T’Challa in Wakanda, and what is means to be a king.

T’Challa’s story is very important to us as it links to the next Avengers films, which is why we brought it forward.’

Captain Marvel and the recently added Ant-Man and The Wasp split the two Avengers films in 2018, while Inhumans is set to close phase three in 2019, but don’t be surprised if Disney gives Marvel the go-ahead to add more films to their third phase. It’s not like they don’t have the money to spare; I mean, imagine owning Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars right now.

Phase three opens with Civil War on May 6, followed by Doctor Strange on November 4, Guardians Vol. 2 on May 5, 2017, Spider-Man on July 28, 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017, Black Panther on February 6, 2018, Avengers: Infinity War I on May 4, 2018, Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, Avengers: Infinity War II on May 3, 2019, and Inhumans on July 12, 2019.
