Everything people are saying about Guardians of the Galaxy is true. Unless they’re speaking negatively about it, then you tell those people to shut up because they have no idea what they’re talking about.
James Gunn has taken a relatively unknown Marvel comic and turned it into the most creative and original movie I have seen in a long time. Without giving too much of the plot away, the film follows a group of “losers” comprised of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), also known as Star-Lord, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (David Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and a talking tree named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) as they attempt to protect the galaxy by keeping an orb away from Thanos.
The film has a very mellow seventies vibe, mostly due to the music selection, which was written into the screenplay by James Gunn. Classics like “I’m Not In Love” by 10cc and “Escape” (The Piña Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes move the story along at an enjoyable pace. The great story, writing, and extremely likable characters doesn’t hurt either. Even the supporting cast was fantastic. Michael Rooker (whom you might recognize as “Merle” from The Walking Dead) is great as Yondu Udonta, Peter Quill’s semi father figure, and Lee Pace plays a very intimidating Ronan the Accuser. Benicio Del Toro’s creepiness as Taneleer Tivan “The Collector” also deserves praise.
Last but not least is the humor level that this movie has. Never have I laughed in a Marvel film as hard as I did during Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether it was laughing at Drax’s obliviousness to metaphors, the visual gags all over the place, or Groot’s facial expressions, the laughs were constant. The visuals effects were nothing short of stunning, far exceeding what you would expect from a Marvel film set in space.
You definitely do not need to be a comic book nerd to appreciate Guardians of the Galaxy. If you want to laugh and see a talented group of actors bring to life one of the most original stories in the last decade, and in my opinion the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then for the love of Kevin Bacon go see this movie!
