The director of the first two Terminator films considers the upcoming reboot to be the ‘third film’ in his series.
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he first two trailers for the Terminator: Genisys haven’t exactly set the world alight, but the film received a huge promotional boost this week, as creator James Cameron has given it his seal of approval. Cameron has previously been dismissive of the third and fourth Terminator films, claiming that Rise of the Machines and Salvation never lived up to the potential the franchise had to offer. However, his recent interview with Yahoo suggests that Cameron is ready to accept Genisys as the long-awaited sequel to Judgement Day:
“I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated. The new film, which I think of as the third film [in the series], you see [Arnold Schwarzenegger] take the character even further. If you like the Terminator films, you’re going to love this movie.”
It doesn’t seem likely that the Avatar director, who had no involvement in the film and has been openly critical of those which came before it, would lie on behalf of the franchise. I take James Cameron at his word, and my hopes for Terminator: Genisys just got a whole lot higher.
Terminator: Genisys stars Schwarzenegger, Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke and Divergent‘s Jai Courtney. The film opens in US cinemas on July 1st.
