[dropcap size=small]O[/dropcap]kay, let’s just for a moment remember what Jake Gyllenhaal looked like for his last film, Nightcrawler…
Now that we all have that in our minds, a Gyllenhaal who is 25 pounds lighter than his usual trim self, let’s take a look at what kind of shape he got into for his next film: Southpaw…
After a year in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber
Obviously Mr. Gyllenhaal has been incredibly busy. This transformation is likely to go down in the books as one of the more impressive physical transformations, with Christian Bale from The Machinist to Batman Begins being the MOST extreme. Gyllenhaal spent weeks on end at the gym training with fighters in Vegas and New York City. Training regiments included two training sessions a day, for 7 days a week. He studied boxers like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao during their fights and also sparred with real boxers, where he took actual punches from professional fighters. Dedication.
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua and scripted by Kurt Sutter. The film chronicles the rise, fall, and redemption of a Junior Middleweight Lefty-Champ named Billy ‘The Great’ Hope. The film will be released by The Weinstein Company in 2015.
