In Three Months, ‘World of Warcraft’ Lost 1.5 Million Subscribers!

[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]t the end of 2014, World of Warcraft had 10 million subscribers. Now, World of Warcraft is down to 5.6 million subscribers, including losing 1.5 million in the last three months, according to Activision Blizzard! Activision did say that despite this huge drop, World of Warcraft is still the number 1 subscription-like game in the world.

“The drop-off could have been worse had it not been for World of Warcraft’s huge Fury of Hellfire update, which helped “stabilize” subscriber figures.” Activision said.

Some good news for Warcraft fans: this week, Activision has announced an expansion called Legion! Typically for games, expansions help bring back fans. Fans are always looking to play more and expanding what you can play in a good game always helps increase a fan base.

For this quarter, Activision Blizzard revenue rose with success of other games, such as Destiny and Diablo 3! The company had $759 million in revenue for the period, which is an increase from last year’s posted amount of $658 million. So far this year, Activision Blizzard made $93 million, which is already double from last year’s profit at $45 million! Another positive for Activision Blizzard is digital revenue, which reached a Q2 record of $611 million during the period. That is a 27 percent increase from last year! Some other highlights from Activision Blizzard’s report:

  • Destiny hits 20 million registered accounts; players have logged over 2 billion gameplay hours since launched in September 2014, which comes out to around 100 hours of gameplay for every player on average.
  • Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and Destiny combined for 70 million registered players and over $1.25 billion in revenue life-to-date.
  • World of Warcraft subscriptions continued to slide, falling from 7.1 million to 5.6 million. Activision notes that the game remains the No. 1 subscription-based game on the planet.
  • Diablo III has now sold more than 30 million copies to date.

World of Warcraft’s Legion beta expansion is expected to be released later this year!
