If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan looking for some news to make you smile, this is just the ticket!
[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]egendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirment to treat us to one more full-length Studio Ghibli film.
Miyazaki has been in and out of retirement since the late 90’s, but has never entirely left the animated fold for too long, and it’s something we’re incredibly thankful for. The prolific director has brought us a multitude of animated beauties, including some of the best Ghibli titles to date. To name a few, they include the likes of Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away, with his last directorial contriubution being The Wind Rises back in 2013.
Ghibli fans are sure to be delighted to learn that Miyazaki is bringing his creativity back in full swing for the new feature-length film, Kemushi no Boro (also known as Boro The Caterpillar). Miyazaki is said to have made a pitch in August to make what was originally a short CGI animation made for the Ghibli museum into a full-length feature film.
The news emerged thanks to a Japanese documentary special surrounding the celebrated award-winning animator, titled The Man Who is not Done: Hayao Miyazaki (via Screenrant). During the special it was revealed that Miyazaki planned on making the feature that – in his words – follows the “story of a tiny, hairy caterpillar. So tiny that it may be easily squished between your fingers”.
It sounds suitably adorable, doesn’t it?
Although the project hasn’t been officially greenlit yet, word is the film is expected to be released sometime in 2019 if all goes well.
News of Miyazaki’s return has brought some light back into 2016, and we really can’t wait to see more wonderous animated magic from one of the best animators and directors around!
Thank you, Miyazaki!
