Everyone’s favorite movie of the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy, brought in a ridiculous $94m domestic and $161m worldwide. James Gunn should be very proud of his latest film, as it deserves every bit of the praise that it has been receiving. It already set a world record for highest August opening and with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film is likely to stay on top of the box office for many weeks to come.

Lucy, the Scarlett Johansson led story of a woman that gains control of 100% of her brain, is still moving along nicely coming in second with weekend earnings of $18m.

The surprisingly under-the-radar James Brown inspired film, Get On Up, comes in at number three this weekend earning almost $14m. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as the legendary James Brown as we follow him from childhood though his journey to superstardom.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s take on Hercules is dropping quickly but still managed to earn enough to stay in the top five. Earning $11m domestic it lands at number four this weekend.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes rounds out the weekend’s top five. After being in the theaters for a little over a month, it was still able to add another $9m to its already massive pile of cash.
