The split will not affect the release of the movie as the script is already complete!
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n 2014, director Gareth Edwards successfully completed and released Godzilla to theaters, which netted $529 million worldwide. He had plans to direct a sequel, but as of recent, those plans fell through.
Edwards split with Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers was mutual. Edwards is just finishing up on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which looks promising from the trailer. Edwards also has other projects he wants to pursue, which is probably the reason why he left Godzilla 2. The good news for this movie is that Max Borenstein, the movie’s script writer, has already completed a script for the movie.
It’s interesting to see that even without a director, Legendary and Warner Brothers set a release date for the movie after Edwards stepped down. So they will need to find Edward’s replacement immediately! The director that Legendary and Warner Brothers pick will also have the opportunity to work on Godzilla vs. Kong, which also has a set date for May 20, 2020.
Legendary Pictures was able to acquire to creatures from Toho’s Godzilla universe that would oppose Godzilla and King Kong, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. Almost has a feel for what Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice turning into Justice League. Not that those beasts will be compared to Superman and Batman by any means, but one can only imagine at this point.
Godzilla 2 is set to be released on March 22, 2019!
