Stuntman turned director Chad Stahelski is best known for being the man behind all four John Wick films. Now, having been tapped to take on a Ghost of Tsushima movie under Sony’s watchful eye, Stahelski says that Sony is “on board” with him doing the film entirely in Japanese, presumably with English subtitles.

Ghost of Tsushima, which was originally a PlayStation-exclusive title from developer Sucker Punch, was met with critical acclaim that will likely see the game come to PC (eventually) and possibly a sequel/spin-off at some point. The story follows a Samurai named Jin who has to protect his island of Tsushima during the Mongol invasion.

“…it’s a Japanese thing about the Mongols invading Tsushima island. A complete Japanese cast, in Japanese. Sony is so on board with backing us on that. I’ve been going to Japan since I was 16. I have a love of the country, love of the people, love of the language.”

The brutal violence that comes with the territory of samurai battles is definitely right up Stahelski’s alley but we hope that he has a good team of writers to add substance to the film. We love all the John Wick movies but they aren’t exactly Oscar-worthy screenplays. Still, we will keep watching those as long as Keanu Reeves is willing. That said, we are still hesitant about being overly excited for any video-game-turned-movie but hopefully, this one turns out well.

No release date or cast announcements have been made for the movie at this time.
