The Shape of Water, The Last Jedi, and Guardians Vol. 2 got nods too!
Happy awards season everyone! No doubt the biggest (and fashionably latest) awards recognizing achievement in film is the Academy Awards, and the nominees for 2017 films have finally been announced.
As expected, a number of prestige indie films and performances from esteemed actors have received Oscar noms, but this year in particular sees a number of mainstream and fan favorite movies up for accolades as well.
In particular, Get Out received nominations for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and most surprisingly, Best Picture. While not necessarily a huge shock due to it’s critical and financial success, it’s amazing none the less to see Jordan Peele’s horror film be recognized in the most prestigious categories.
Noteworthy as well is the recognition for Logan. Although the phenomenal finale for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine only received one nomination, this is the first time a Marvel film (and really any superhero movie) has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film’s story and stellar execution is what makes Logan such an impactful experience, and it’s awesome to see more attention come this film’s way.
Another film we loved that got some Oscar love was Baby Driver. Edgar Wright’s masterful rhythmic action flick was recognized for Film Editing, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing. Perhaps all three of these elements are best showcased during a certain sequence in the film that was highlighted in our Top Ten Movie Moments of 2017 list.
While we’re little salty that Wonder Woman and The Lego Batman Movie (Boss Baby, really?) didn’t receive any nominations (and that Blade Runner 2049 didn’t get more love), we’re happy even a handful of geeky movies were recognized, a trend that will hopefully continue.
