The madness will continue.
[toggler title=”TL;DR ” ]George Miller confirmed in an interview with TopGear that he has two scripts for future Mad Max Sequels. One project title has been revealed – Mad Max: The Wasteland, and it’s possible that a sequel will focus on Furiosa.[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n an interview with TopGear, George Miller revealed that two more Mad Max films are in the works, and definitely on the way.
It seems rumblings of such news has been erupting for quite some time since the initial success of Fury Road, and we’ve already covered how Miller has appeared confident that more Mad Max films were a definite possibility earlier this year.
But if you weren’t convinced before, then this interview should persuade you that it’s time to get pretty excited.
Miller began by explaining how circumstances lead them to film Mad Max: Fury Road in South West Africa, and during this change over from Australia, they were able to delve into the stories of the characters in more detail – resulting in Miller having more than enough extra material to fill two more scripts.
We were…rained out of Australia. The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down deep into the backstory…So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying. We’re talking to the studio [Warner Bros.] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I’m not so sure.
The ‘two stories’ Miller touches on is likely referring to one particular idea for a future Mad Max project that has been deeply set into the rumour mill in recent months.
This rumour heavily leans towards a planned sequel which will focus on Charlize Theron’s badass character, Furiosa. Miller is evidently fond of the character, and with her popularity among fans, it’s completely reasonable to assume just that.
The other story is a mystery, but a title has been announced for one of the upcoming sequels set to go ahead – Mad Max: The Wasteland – and Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are both attached to reprise their roles.
Which one will come first? Well, that’s the big question isn’t it. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Given that we now have a title, it’s safe to assume we can take Miller’s word for it. There has been no indication of when we can expect to see these sequels, but the future return of the wasteland madness is surely going to be worth the wait – and if Fury Road is anything to go by, we’ll be in for quite a ride.
