Maybe trying to fix one of the most controversial moments in Star Wars wasn’t a good idea.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]sk any Star Wars fan who shot first in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and you’ll get two answers, either Han or Greedo. Both answers will some how upset someone who is passionate about the movies and you’ll quickly find yourself in the middle of an intense debate. George Lucas has recently explained why he changed the special edition of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope so that it showed Greedo shooting first.
According to director George Lucas, Han shooting first went against who Han Solo actually is if it showed him shooting first. Apparently George Lucas felt that even though Greedo was going to kill Han Solo regardless of the outcome of their meeting, Han wouldn’t kill Greedo in order to save his own life.
“Han Solo was going to marry Leia, and you look back and say, ‘Should he be a cold-blooded killer?’” Lucas asks. “Because I was thinking mythologically — should he be a cowboy, should he be John Wayne? And I said, ‘Yeah, he should be John Wayne.’ And when you’re John Wayne, you don’t shoot people [first] — you let them have the first shot. It’s a mythological reality that we hope our society pays attention to.”
The better question everyone should be asking is how could anyone possible miss a shot from that close? Greedo is sitting directly across from Han Solo, you couldn’t possibly miss a shot like that. Regardless of how upset some of you are, George Lucas probably doesn’t care and he certainly isn’t going to see it. The man has tried to stay away from the internet and he has no social media profile since 2000. He doesn’t even have an email, how crazy is that? Just about as crazy as Greedo shooting first of course.
