Get ready to see some Locusts on the big screen!
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t was recently announced that Universal would be bringing the Gears of War franchise to the silver screen. Scott Stuber (Ted) and Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will be in charge of the project as they were named the producers of the film.
Rod Fergusson, head of the game developer The Coalition, sat down for an interview with Variety to talk about the upcoming project.
“As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”
He also addressed if the movies would be adaptations or if they would make a new story for the film.
“I think you have to let the movies be the movies. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie.”
This break from being a straight adaptation is not a new direction for video game movies. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed film is using a similar path of creating new characters in the universe to create a story that was not told in the video games. While there is no telling if this strategy will pay off, it is an interesting one.
There are no release or production dates set for the Gears of War film.
