[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]f you didn’t already know, the much anticipated Full Metal Alchemist will make it’s big screen debut in live action form next year. Director Fumihiko Sori is dedicated and passionate about the manga/anime and wanted to follow it as closely as possible, even down to casting the perfect actors.

“I want to depict something that follows the original work as much as possible,” Sori said. “The cast is entirely Japanese, but the setting is Europe. However, their race and nationality isn’t expressed in a specific form.”

Here’s a quick look at the actors compared to their characters:

The cast of the film so far will be Ryosuke Yamada as Edward Elric, Tsubasa Honda will be Winry Rockbell, and Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang.

Considering how poorly past anime to live action films have fared (eg. Dragonball Evolution), fans of the series have a right to be skeptical. The response in Japan hasn’t been great, but perhaps we should all reserve judgement until it premiers. We can be hopeful, right?

Full Metal Alchemist is slated for release winter of 2017.
