FOX certainly has its ups and downs with shows, some being a massive success, while most are incredible failures. For me personally, Gotham is just about in the middle leaning towards success.
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]ith 1 Season and 18 Episodes to its name, Gotham has done a great job of bringing about the perspectives of the GCPD and Detective Gordon (who later becomes Commissioner Gordon), along with the youthful Alfred looking out for young master Bruce after the untimely demise of the latter’s parents. With Bruce spending each and every hour trying to resolve the criminality that plagues Wayne Enterprises, and trying to solve his parents murders, the villains that eventually run wild attempting to take over their portion of the city are slowly coming to. From the Riddler to the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor really steals the show around every turn), to the hairless sociopath, Victor Zsasz. These characters all have their place among the Gotham Universe. Then of course there is Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Fish Mooney’s character was created uniquely and exclusively to the show as a means to bring about the Penguins corrupt nature and projectile his career as a sinister villain within the world of the Caped Crusader. And while the performances from the likes of Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, and Robin Taylor stand out from their pinnacle characters that hold up the foundation of the show, some fans of the series felt that Jada Pinkett-Smith’s performance just did not belong. Personally, I am among this group as I find her on-screen performance over-the-top and over-acting like never before.
Regardless of our personal feelings of the character and Jada’s acting ability, like her or not, it seems that the character will not be returning for season two.
Welp, we certainly won’t miss her much. Or at all.
.
While on the Kelly & Michael Morning Show (previously Regis and Kelly), Kelly Ripa asked Jada Pinkett-Smith right out if Fish Mooney will be appearing in Season 2. Jada had this to say in response:
“I do not think so. I signed for a year, and you know, the year is up. BUT, there are some great things coming to Gotham. Believe you me.”
In the show, Fish Mooney is a former nightclub owner (Penguin took over after his sudden but inevitable betrayal) who was sent to a secluded island where its captives are being experimented on. This was done to punish Fish for her own betrayal towards mob boss Falcone.
So what do you think? Is Jada Pinkett’s departure from the show a good thing, or a bad thing? They’ll likely have to kill off Fish Mooney to have her out of the show, and if that is the case, is that the best course of action? Then again, this could be a ploy to throw viewers and fans off of the trail of a much bigger televised plan at work here.
