Rolling around at the speed of…wow, this is awesome.
The fan base for Sonic the Hedgehog is a ravenous, yet capable bunch. When they aren’t forcing me to switch on SafeSearch when looking for images of Sonic & Knuckles, they’re doing awesome stuff like crafting impressive fan games.
A brand new ambitious fan game is Sonic Utopia, created by The Great Lange. Utopia is an open-world 3D Sonic game with visuals and music that pays tribute to the Genesis-era Blue Blur.
Check out the reveal trailer below.
In the video’s description, The Great Lange explains that “Utopia is an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic’s style and tie it together in a cohesive experience.”
Also specified in the description is that the game’s engine, visuals, and music are all created from scratch, including the character models and textures, which is an impressive feat to say the least.
From what we’ve seen, Sonic Utopia looks absolutely incredible. It brings the nostalgia while offering a more interesting take on navigating 3D space as our favorite hedgehog.
Sega has previously hired a game programmer who’s created fan Sonic games before (the designer of the upcoming Sonic Mania for example) so perhaps they’ll consider The Great Lange for Sonic 2017. At least we hope so.
Also, PC players can try out the demo build of the game!
