Sounds like a galaxy that’s not far far away after all!
[dropcap size=small]F[/dropcap]or years, Star Wars has been one of the most popular movie franchises in history. Since 1977 when Star Wars: A New Hope was released to theaters, the franchise’s fandom has only grown. With Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens set to release in less than a month, Disney is already thinking about extending the franchise’s movie future by announcing that it will release a Star Wars movie every year, according to Wired.
Wired reported that Disney is planning to do this as long as fans are willing to buy tickets, which was pretty obvious when the latest movie only took minutes to sell out. This set the record for fastest-selling movie ever.
“If the people at the Walt Disney Company, which bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, have anything to say about it, the past four decades of Star Wars are merely prologue,” Wired writer Adam Rogers wrote. “They are making more. A lot more.”
With this announcement, Rogers also said that another way of examining the amount of interest in Star Wars is by age. If you are the same age as Rogers is, then you most likely won’t be around to see the last movie. That statement just proves how big of a picture Disney and Lucasfilms wants to create for this franchise.
Disney and Lucasfilms joined together back in 2013, but that hasn’t stopped them about exploring the possibility of expanding with other companies. One great example would be what Marvel has done in the past several years. Marvel has also partnered up with Disney in 2009 and Marvel partnered up with Samsung earlier this year.
With Lucasfilms partnering up with Disney, fans of Star Wars have only grown more and more prior to Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, with the fanbase only growing year after year.
Next year will have the first Star Wars anthology movie called Rogue One that will tell the story of what happens in between episodes three and four. That movie is already set to be released to theaters on December 16, 2016.
