Disney is eager to explore the expansive Star Wars universe even further.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter the phenomenal success of Force Awakens – which grossed an insanely impressive $2.9 Billion at the box office – it comes as no surprise that we’ve been hearing about a flurry of upcoming Star Wars projects.
They include the spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as the future Han Solo and Boba Fett origin films scheduled.
And we can’t forget the continuation of the new trilogy to follow Force Awakens, with filming for Star Wars: Episode VIII currently under way, and plans to release Episode IX sometime in 2019.
Whilst this already lands us with 5 more films set in the Star Wars universe, Disney isn’t stopping there, and have reportedly got a total of at least 10 new Star Wars films on the cards.
In an interview with The Sun, JJ Abrams spoke about Disney’s interest in the Star Wars universe after the success of his directorial Star Wars baby, Force Awakens:
There are some really cool things being discussed. It is very exciting to see how it is being put together.
A source for The Sun went onto expand on Disney’s eagerness to get more Star Wars films made, and highlighted the limitless possibilities of George Lucas’ expansive universe:
The success of The Force Awakens has given executives much to think about.
So many characters’ back-stories and futures can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind. Now they can be turned around in a year
Given that there’s such a vast array of characters, worlds, galaxies and stories for Disney to explore in the Star Wars ‘verse, it really would silly of them not to exploit this dead cert cash cow.
No other projects have been confirmed as of yet (aside from the trilogy and 3 spin-off’s), but there are rumours making the rounds that a film about Obi Wan Kenobi is among the list of ideas. We’ll just have to wait and see what else is in store.
With so much scope for Disney to explore, it’ll be exciting to see what else we’ll get to experience, and what other characters we’ll get acquainted with in future.
Let’s just hope we don’t get a Jar Jar Binks origins story, hey?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is due to hit theatres 16 December, 2016, and Star Wars: Episode VIII is slated for release 15 December, 2017.
