How new Wii U game can fit into Mario timeline!
[toggler title=”TL:DR” ]An alternate universe discovered if Mario failed.[/toggler]
Nintendo came out with Splatoon almost a month ago: a third-person shooter game and your character can turn from a humanoid with an ink gun to a squid….and back again! They are known as Inklings. But if you look at the squids closely, they look like the Bloopers that Mario battles.
If you compare the two squids, the shape of their heads are the same, but the tentacles have evolved on the Inkling, compared to the four tentacles on the Blooper. The Inkling’s two tentacles have extensions, one on each side, that are bigger and have suction cups at the end. The eyes are what catch me the most. Out of all the enemies Mario faced, I always thought that Bloopers were the ones that were out-of-place. It looked as if someone has strings attached to their body and tentacles and basically made them go after Mario. But the Inkling’s eyes actually move around and it looks like it has emotion and purpose.
So you’re probably asking yourself where could Splatoon possibly fit on Mario’s timeline? It would start in a game that has been out for a long time: Super Mario Sunshine!
In this game, Mario has to rid Isle Delfino of the polluted ink left by Shadow Mario. In order to save the island, Mario must collect shine sprites and use F.L.U.D.D. (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, nice name Nintendo!) to fight his enemies and clean Isle Delfino of all the inky goo that it has been infested with. Mario does save Isle Delfino and everyone on it, but what if Mario had failed and the ink consumed the whole island?
Mario’s failure would not only start the Golden Age of the Koopa Clan, but also the evolution of the Bloopers. Bloopers would turn into Inklings, grew out of their gills and expand out to the rest of the world. Inklings were able to survive off their own ink puddles that are left behind for them to dive into.
At the same time, a species called the Octolings, humanoid and octopus, also evolved with the Inklings. At first, the two species were able to get along and live amongst each other. But after a while, neither side could co-exist and ended up starting a war against each other, which is basically the plot of Splatoon. Mario was close to being the main character in Splatoon, but Nintendo decided to go a different direction. His presence in the game would create an inconsistency with the other stories that Mario is apart of.
Just seeing this game can only be a hint of what worlds would be like if Mario ever failed. His image would definitely go down as a disappointment and Bowser would end up getting his own game (…maybe). This is only in an alternate universe, so be glad that Bowser isn’t ruling Mushroom Kingdom right now. It does make us think at some point if Mario will ever fail. Guess we will just have to play and see.
Splatoon is available only on Wii U.
