Donald Glover will, from here on out, be known as Childish Landino.
Reviews for the latest Star Wars spin-off, Solo: A Star Wars Story, have been for the most part been overwhelmingly positive with quite a bit of praise for Donald Glover’s work as Lando Calrissian. So much so that it appears that Lucasfilm has already decided that the next Star Wars spin-off will be centered around Lando.
Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, broke the news in an interview with Premiere France, saying:
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”
Starting in 2016 when Disney began releasing Star Wars films, the standalone films have taken place between alternating years with the Skywalker Saga trilogy. Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives this month and then next year Star Wars: Episode IX is set to be released some time in 2019. This leaves the next unnamed standalone film to be released in 2020.
But the one question we all have is just what Kathleen Kennedy means by “next”. The only other idea for a standalone film that has grown in popularity since the idea broke on Reddit is the standalone Obi-Wan film that would supposedly take place between episodes III and IV.
Back in January, Ewan McGregor commented on the idea of an Obi-Wan film saying, “There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do.” Considering there hasn’t been any news surrounding this idea, it seems fair to guess that a Lando standalone film is the next film to be released in 2020.
After all, Donald Glover has been very successful following his work as a rapper, his TV series Atlanta, and his music video “This Is America” which has reached over 100 million views on YouTube already. On top of that, the actor reportedly signed on for multiple films.
