Bungie’s “Developer Insight” Blog About Future Raids and Dungeons Divides Community

Fans are not happy with the direction Bungie seems to be taking Destiny 2 in "Frontiers".

Many in the community seem divided on the news that Destiny 2 will feature one raid and one dungeon every year going forward with Frontiers. It is hard to say at this point which side we take on it, simply because we do not know how big or expansive these “expansion” activities will be. However, we have zero faith that Bungie wont try to do the bare minimum for as much money as possible. Still, we remain cautiously curious but we won’t be pre-ordering anything.

  • “So we’re losing an additional entire dungeon, and a reprised raid? That seems like a massive downgrade, whatever way it’s spun.” –Soul_of_Miyazaki
  • “No mention of reprised raids or VoG and GoS getting updated rewards. Only one dungeon a year. We’re cooked.” –blamite
  • “I hope Marathon flops hard :)” –Psdaly
  • “Game is on life support. It’s been a good ride boys” –8Cupsofcoffeedaily

All this follows the constant speculation about Destiny 2 winding down its development as Bungie turns toward other projects, while Destiny 2 remains on a sort of life support. That said, we do not think Sony would let that happen considering their recent L that was Concord and their follow-up L in all the bad press they got from the price of the upcoming PS5 Pro.

With Bungie’s focus apparently shifting to other projects like Marathon, Destiny Rising (allegedly almost entirely developed by Netease), and even a new MOBA with tower defense mechanics, some long-time players are claiming they are done with Destiny 2. Many have invested hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into the game, and that’s not even counting their time spent in Destiny 1.

As for the actual confirmed content, Bungie has clarified that each year will include one new raid and one new dungeon and no more separate Dungeon Key purchase (though we still do not know the prices for any of this). What was once a content model with a new raid and a reprised raid every year is now shifting, with no mention of reprised raids moving forward. This leaves Destiny 1’s Wrath of the Machine raid, once expected and highly anticipated, in limbo. Furthermore, there is no word on whether vaulted Destiny 2 raids will ever return either, meaning we may never see any of those again.

Just to be clear, and something worth pointing out, Bungie has made many claims in the past about what they will do only to not do it, such as more communication (which they have 100% of the time always walked back on), more transparency around Eververse and keeping Gambit feeling fresh and alive. Not to mention the state of the Crucible, among countless other things.

On the other hand, Bungie has also made many claims of things they would not do only to walk that back and do it anyway such as various Eververse enhancements and duplications protections, the Sunsetting of paid content and gear only to reissue it, bringing back Ice Breaker (we are happy about this one, though), and numerous others.

Basically, we are saying that whatever Bungie says, Bungie can very easily walk things back or simply abandon any stated initiatives entirely (Crucible labs, anyone?). And given they said nothing regarding Wrath of the Machine in particular, it could still return some day, especially if fans want it bad enough and player counts continue to decline (Forsaken, Gjallarhorn, The Final Shape, and Ice Breaker are all solid examples of this.

The sad reality is that every move Bungie seems to make feels substantially too little and overwhelmingly too late. The game is hemorrhaging players and many won’t return even for new Dungeons and Raids. As for the players that do return, it stands to reason that these activities wont keep them around for too long. And we have seen virtually nothing about ways to bring in new players- something Sony is very adamant about being fixed.

Bungie had a second blog post going up, another “Developer Insight” and focuses on combatant modifier which sees weaker enemies get certain new abilities to make them harder like Hive Acolytes shooting meteors at you and Dregs being immune to all damage unless they are hit with a melee attack. This just sounds tedious and annoying and in no way comes across like an improvement to the gameplay that will make the experience more fun.

Instead of reprised raids, Bungie plans to evolve Destiny 2’s singular annual raid with new challenges, loot, and even encounters added through Major Updates. While this adds depth to a single raid and keeps it fresh for longer, many players feel it ultimately means less content overall. The new roadmap, part of Destiny 2’s *New Frontiers* era, raises concerns about the game’s future, particularly with reports suggesting this schedule might continue until 2027.

The question of pricing also looms large, with past bundles—including expansions, seasons, and dungeons—costing $100. With the new model offering two smaller expansions, four battle passes but fewer raids and dungeons, players are left wondering if Bungie will adjust the cost accordingly or stick to the same price point. This uncertainty only adds fuel to the ongoing debate about whether Bungie is winding down support for Destiny 2 in favor of its other projects.
