Yep, you read correctly. Earlier today, Bungie tweeted a photo that is getting a few Joss Whedon fan’s riled up in excitement for the final version of Destiny, the MMORPG in space (think Halo meets Borderlands). The tweet, which said nothing more than “Not available in Beta” with a photo of the Serenity ship from Fox’s short-lived, but popular show Firefly, seems to be gaining a lot of traction around the interwebs as it looks to be legit. Though a follow-up tweet from Bungie said they aren’t equipping players with Serenity, so it could just be nothing more than a bit of fun.
For those unfamiliar, Joss Whedon created, directed, and composed for Firefly, a 12 episode series (and one movie titled Serenity) that aired on Fox and gathered a massive cult following. The series stars Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass as the main cast and crew aboard Serenity, a firefly-class spaceship used primarily for smuggling illegal goods across the solar system. The characters all have their own unique backstory, but come together under unique circumstances to work under or contribute to the prosperity of Serenity and its captain, Malcolm Reynolds (Fillion).
Could this be a tease of something much cooler wrapped up in future DLC? Or is this just a cruel prank to get Firefly fans anxious? While the latter seems more likely, we anxiously await the final version of Destiny this fall.
Destiny hits Xbox and Playstation platforms this September 9th.
