It’s hard enough completing the Water Temple while seeing what you’re doing.
Like many gamers, one of Terry Garrett’s favorite video games of all time is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Despite being blind, Garrett has recently completed this game over the span of five years.
Garrett’s playthrough of the game is chronicled on his YouTube channel. He has completed a number of 2-D games in the past, but he wanted to showcase his ability to play 3-D games through these videos.
Garrett was able to play OoT through utilizing a setup of two speakers positioned to the left and right of his head. Through using the sound effects in the game, Garrett is able to navigate Link based on what he hears, and his own knowledge of the game.
He explains this in the first video of the playthrough below (posted in 2011):
Garrett played an emulated version of the game, so if a mistake was made, he could quickly load a save state and continue.
Through this process, Garrett completed the infamously hard Water Temple in only four 15-minute videos. If you’re like me, you gave up and had to meticulously follow a GameFAQ walkthrough.
The final video of his playthrough, featuring the climactic battle with Ganon, was published on 1/2/16.
We applaud Garrett for showing us the true meaning of patience and perseverance. Ocarina of Time is a great game, but it can be super frustrating at times.
Thank you, Terry. Thank you for not giving up.
