Well, I can’t say I saw this coming nor did I hear anything among the grapevines but there you have it- Idris Elba is your Knuckles in the upcoming Sonic sequel.
Earlier today, Elba confirmed the news by announcing it on his personal Twitter, which you can see below. Not much more needs to be said other than “Knock, knock….” apparently. And despite the rocky start the first movie had before reaching theaters, it was fairly well-received so as you can imagine, fans are excited for a sequel, even now more so than ever.

At the present time, we do not know for sure if Colleen O’Shaughnessey will be back to voice Tails (she voiced the character in a mid-credits scene in the first film) but we imagine this is likely as the character needs a softer, lighter touch than say, Elba’s deep, rough and tumble voice, something we didn’t exactly expect for Knuckles but it totally works now that we think about it.
We always imagined Knuckles having a voice like Shoto Todoroki (David Matranga) while Tails would have a more Bryce Papenbrook-type sound (Rin Okumura, Kirito, Eren Jaeger, pretty much any anime character with blue eyes and black hair).
After defeating Dr. Robotnik and sending him to the mushroom planet, Sonic is ready for more freedom, as Tom and Maddie agree to let him stay home while they go on vacation. However, Dr. Robotnik (now Dr. Eggman) returns from the Mushroom planet with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that can give the power to build and destroy civilizations. Now, Sonic and his newfound best friend, Tails, embark on a journey to get the emerald, before it falls into Eggman’s hands.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to release next year on April 8, 2022.
