Star Wars has gone through some pretty sizeable shakeups over the last several months. First, Rian Johnson was announced as the director for the next new Star Trilogy, which was said to take place many generations prior to the Skywalker saga. Then there were rumors that due to the poor reception of Solo, and the many criticisms of The Last Jedi, despite making tons of money, Rian Johnson would not be directing the new trilogy, though were no confirmations.
Then, Game of Thrones showruiners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were signed on to write a new trilogy for Star Wars (whether or not this was the trilogy that Johnson was supposed to direct was never confirmed, though it was probably the case). Then DND departed from their Star Wars project for “personal reasons”, which allegedly had nothing to do with the massive failure and critical backlash from the overwhelmingly poor writing of the final season of Game of Thrones.
Now, president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy has seemingly found an entirely new director to take on a brand new trilogy that is set to be announced by Disney/Lucasfilm in 2020 that will confirm the return to the big screen in 2022.
The report comes in from the Hollywood Reporter, where details remain few but seem legitimate in that the next new trilogy will come from a director that has been decided but is waiting to be announced at a later time. If we had to guess, they are waiting for Rise to end its theatrical run, and then announce their future plans at D23, but that is just a hunch.
Of course, this would mean that we likely won’t be seeing a new trilogy from Rian Johnson any time soon, despite claims that he is still “in talks” for a future Star Wars project.
Perhaps Johnson will be working on a whole separate trilogy in between this mystery set of films, though we find that extremely unlikely. If we had to bet on it, we would expect an announcement that he is no longer attached to Star Wars, after the criticisms and outrage from many online communities regarding the directions that TLJ took.
Nothing is confirmed at this time, but rumors have been floating around that a new Star Wars trilogy would come in the form of a time period far before the empire and the Skywalkers, dating back to a Knights of the Old Republic era, which we would love to see but has not been stated by any legitimate source.
For now, let us just hope that Rise of Skywalker does a good job pleasing fans as the finale of the Skywalker Saga, and enjoy Pedro Pascal as The Mandalorian. If nothing else, we are excited about the future of Star Wars but we could use a break from the films for a while.
