If it’s based off SD Gundam, we riot.
At this year’s Anime Expo, Sunrise President and CEO Yasuo Miyakawa has announced that a live-action Gundam film is currently in the works! Sunrise’s Yasuo Miyakawa claimed that his company has been working with Legendary Pictures on the project and co-production has already started.
However, while this announcement certainly merits celebration there are no remaining details beyond this. No release date has been announced and no familiar actors or a director has been named. In addition, no one knows if the film will follow in the foot steps of previous film styles like Fullmetal Alchemist or Attack on Titan (hopefully not) or if it will take a path similar to Pacific Rim.
That said, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to bet on the film following the original Gundam series. The franchise started in 1979 and centered around space colonies declaring independence from Earth while using mobile suits in space as their weapons. The franchise was incredibly popular and continues to exist through new shows, movies, video games and novels.
