For the second week in a row Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is still going strong in the box office. This weekend, the Matt Reeves directed Apes sequel managed to pull in $36m, bringing the film’s collective earnings to roughly $138m domestic and $240m worldwide.
At number two this weekend is The Purge: Anarchy with a total of $28m. Somewhat weak of an opening considering that the original Purge film from last year brought in $34m on it’s opening weekend.
Children must have done a great job convincing their parents to take them out to the movies this weekend, Planes: Fire & Rescue comes in at number three with approximately $18m domestic and about $27m worldwide.
Considering the amount of advertising that I’ve seen for the R-rated Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel comedy Sex Tape, placement this low on the list seems unexpected. It only brought in roughly $15m domestic and $18m worldwide.
Finally, rounding out the top five this weekend is Transformers: Age of Extinction. Optimus and friends are still holding their own bringing in $10m this weekend with a total of $227m domestic and $886m worldwide.
