A “global casting search for a Chinese actress to play Mulan” is reportedly underway.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] lot of Disney films have been getting the live-action treatment in recent years. With films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming release of Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson as Belle), this trend certainly doesn’t show any signs of stopping anytime soon.
So it won’t come as too much of a surprise to learn recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter have revealed another live-action Disney movie is in the works. Disney announced Mulan will be the next film in the line-up set for a live-action adaptation.
The movie has been slated for release sometime in December 2018, and word has quickly spread that a global casting search for a Chinese actress to play the title role is now officially underway.
Jurassic World writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa are both attached to the project, with Chris Bender, Jake Weiner and Jason Reed producing. So far no director has been announced, and since they’ve just begun their search for Mulan, it will probably be some time before we learn of any casting decisions.
The much-loved 1998 Disney film Mulan is based on the classic Chinese ballad about a legendary female warrior (Hua Mulan). As many know, the story follows that of a young woman who saves her father from going into battle against the Huns by disguising herself in his armor, and joining the Chinese army in her father’s stead.
In the process, Mulan becomes one of China’s greatest heroines, and – in my opinion – cements her place as one of the best Disney characters in recent memory.
With a whole host of fun characters, excellent voice acting, beautiful animation, stellar musical numbers, and strong underlining moral messages – such as always being true to yourself and realising your own inner strength – Mulan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Disney releases to date.
We’ll just have to wait and see if Disney’s live-action version is as good as its animated counterpart.
I’m just going to end this here by sharing one of my all time favourite Disney songs:
Be sure to check back with us in future for more on the project as news develops!
The live-action Mulan is currently set for release December 2018.
