Mission: BREAKOUT! is set to replace a Disney’s California Adventure classic.
After being rumored earlier this year, President Marvel Studios Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con that a new ride is coming to Disney’s California Adventure (Disneyland’s sister park), based off the wildly popular Guardians of the Galaxy.Â
The attraction is called Mission: BREAKOUT!, and sees the Guardians captured by the Collector (Benicio Del Toro). It’s up to Rocket and the ride’s guests to break the A-holes out.Â
“The setting is a kind of fortress that’s owned by the mysterious Collector and it’s packed with creatures and his latest acquisitions from across the universe,” explains Joe Rohde, Portfolio Creative Director of Walt Disney Imagineering. “Now he has imprisoned the Guardians of the Galaxy and they’re hanging in display cases over a giant abyss. The captor doesn’t know it but Rocket Raccoon has escaped and is enlisting our aid—all the guests—to help the Guardians in a breakout scheme. And the rest is comical chaos; a very funny, very irreverent story and a really wonderful addition to Disney California Adventure.”Â
While the attraction sounds like a blast, it comes at a cost. Mission: BREAKOUT! will be taking the place of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.Â
Based off concept art, it looks like the core idea of the Tower of Terror will remain for Mission: BREAKOUT! Specifically, the attraction will remain a dark ride fused with a drop tower, but now with a Guardians theme rather than Twilight Zone.Â
For those who haven’t been to Disney’s California Adventure, the Tower of Terror was for a long time the go-to attraction of this overshadowed theme park. Featuring an elaborate queue, awesome ties to the classic show, and an incredibly designed exterior, the Tower of Terror was a must-ride.Â
If we had a say in the matter, a brand-new Guardians ride would be created from scratch, and the Tower of Terror would remain. Out with the old and in with the new, unfortunately.Â
The Tower will make its final drop this coming January. As of now, the Tower of Terror in Disney World’s Hollywood Studios will not change.Â
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission: BREAKOUT! opens summer 2017.
Go ride the Tower of Terror.Â
