Just how far would you go to understand the mind of a murdering sociopath?
30 Seconds To Mars front man, and the new face of the Joker, Jared Leto, recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he met with real psychopaths to better understand his role.
“To the Joker, violence is a symphony. This is someone who gets an extreme reward from the act of violence and manipulation,” he told EW. “I did meet with people who were experts, doctors, and psychiatrists that dealt with psychopaths and people who had committed horrendous crimes, and then I spent some time with those people themselves, people who have been institutionalized for great periods of time.”
This iteration of Joker will be portrayed in a slightly different direction, as compared to past roles of that of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, while staying true to the disturbing and insane personality we all know and love. His slightly different appearance and outfit came as a shock to many fans of the DC villain, from his bright green hair, to his tattoos and silver teeth. It seems as though Leto is determined to rival the performances of the Jokers before him.

To really immerse himself in the role, he sent “gifts” to the cast while on set, containing rather bizarre items from a pig carcass, a live rat, and even used condoms. Jared told The Inquisitir the Joker was not one to “respect things like personal space or boundaries.”
“It’s a very intoxicating role,” he added. “I think the Joker lives in between reality and another plane. You have permission to break rules and to challenge yourself and anyone around you in a really unique way.”
I think it’s safe to say we’re all pretty excited to see him fill such an iconic role. Suicide Squad premiers in theaters August 5th.
