We’ve traveled across all of time and space to find the top ten companions in Doctor Who!
[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]ince Russell T. Davies revived one of Britain’s most popular shows back in 2005 we and the Doctor have seen so many companions come and go. Sometimes our favorite companions have the best send-off that ends with everyone smiling, other times we’re crying our eyes at one of the most painful farewells anyone could possibly fathom (both Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat have great skill in this area). So grab your sonic screwdriver and allons-y!
10. Ricky Smith (Mickey Smith)
Just kidding, no one likes Mickey.
10. Martha Jones
Okay, so it might be that we couldn’t bare to see the Doctor having any other companion but Rose Tyler. Nonetheless Martha Jones was incredible whiny and was constantly searching for affection from the Doctor who was obviously still reeling from the loss of Rose Tyler. If she had taken every hint from the Doctor that he wasn’t interested she may have turned out to be a better companion. Aside from this, she still was a strong individual who eventually put what was best for herself first, and that is something we can respect.
9. K-9
They say that dogs are man’s best friend, so is a metal dog that shoots laser a Time Lord’s best friend? K-9 Mark I to Mark IV was a very reliable companion not only for the Doctor himself, but for the Doctor’s companions as well. Whether it be blowing open a door because the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) was too lazy to open it himself or shooting lasers at bat-like aliens in a British High School for the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), K-9 was always a faithful and reliable companion.
8. Leela of the Sevateem
If you’re looking for a companion that could kick ass and give the Doctor something to think about, Leela was your girl. Leela was a warrior from a tribe of savages in the future. She traveled with the Fourth Doctor for some time before falling in love with another Time Lord and decided to stay on Gallifrey. While a bit primitive, she was violent and wasn’t afraid to punch first and ask questions later.
7. Captain Jack Harkness
He’s a sexy, omnisexual time agent that can’t die. He will flirt with anyone and anything just by looking at them and saying hello. Captain Jack brought a certain light-hearted atmosphere to Doctor Who that no one else could replicate. While he was always trying to get into someone’s pants, he always had his heart in the right place and he would never second guess about taking a bullet, or a tomahawk cruise missile for that matter, for you. If we could somehow convince Steven Moffat to bring Captain Jack back for another episode or two, or even a season, that’d be great.
6. Rory Williams
He punched Hitler in the face and then put him in a cupboard! Not only that, but he decimated an entire Cybermen fleet too. Oh, and if that wasn’t impressive enough for you, he guarded the love of his life who was locked inside the Pandora for thousands of years. Aside from setting the bar kind of high for us guys, Rory Williams was a great companion. Instead of fighting his girlfriend’s friendship with the Doctor (cough cough, Danny Pink), he actually embraced it and settled along for the ride of his long and crazy life.
5. Donna Noble
She is the most important woman in all of creation. It is because of Donna Noble that reality still exists, she saved it from being torn apart by the Daleks and Davros. She was smart, sassy and she was never afraid to give you a piece of her mind. Her story arc, from going from someone who thought she was unimportant and a nobody to someone who feels like they are meaningful, was incredibly well done. The worst part? She’ll never remember any of it. Isn’t that wizard?
4. Clara Oswald
Ah yes, the Impossible Girl! Clara Oswald is a one of a kind. She has saved the Doctor multiple times throughout his many different lives since his very first face. Clara Oswald is one of the few who companions doesn’t quite get caught up in the adventures of the Doctor. She comes and goes as she pleases, deciding when and where she wants to go next. Not only that, she is the first companion to say that the Tardis is smaller on the outside.
3. Rose Tyler
She was the companion that was meant to be the Doctor’s next wife, his second or third depending on if you count his marriage to Queen Elizabeth the First. That being said, Rose Tyler was one of the main reasons that Doctor Who is still rolling strong today. Her love story with the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and with the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) is what really made the show move forward. She learned just as much as to what the universe was capable of as she did about herself during her travels with the Doctor. She is also one of the few companions who actually got a happily ever after. What a Badwolf.
2. River Song
Okay, okay. I already know that some of you are probably shouting, “River Song was never a companion!”, but let’s think about this for a minute. River Song spent several episode with the Doctor, and those are only episode that we actually watched. River Song was orchestrated to kill the Doctor and she ended up falling in love with him, talk a love that is meant to be. River and the Doctor’s timelines are all wibbley, wobbley, timey, wimey. But they do exists and she has hinted that she has met every version of him, except for the War Doctor. She has every right to call him “my Doctor”. Did I forget to mentioned that she is one of the only companions who actually knows how to properly operate and drive the Tardis?
1. Amy Pond
Yup, that’s right. Amy Pond is the number one companion and here is why. When Russell T. Davies left the show along with David Tennant, it really fell on Steven Moffat, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan to put the show in the right direction. They basically had to start from scratch almost and many people doubted if the show could carry on. That being said, while Matt Smith did an impeccable job portraying the Doctor as a mad man with a box, Karen Gillan’s role as Amy Pond was perfect. She brought a certain warmth to the show, she made the Doctor feel like he had a place to call home. She understood the Doctor better than nearly anyone but River Song. Plus, she brought along Rory for the ride and its because of her that River Song was introduced.
