Bungie will abandon the Light system in order for players to increase their level!
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n the upcoming expansion for Destiny, The Taken King, players will no longer rely on “finding Light or increasing your Light level” in order to increase your armor level. According to Game Informer, Players will simply have to kill enemies and complete bounties instead of trying to gain more Light. This applies to the entirety of the leveling progression: the XP you earn will go toward your level until you max out at the new level cap, 40.
Of course, the armor will still be able to be used. Quality items are still good to use in the game to increase your power and defense, so legendaries and exotic weapons and items should still be searched for. Director Luke Smith said the light level requirement forced players to focus on collecting gear.
Bungie announced that loot drops will be strictly tied to your character level. Once your level gets closer to level 40, your character’s chances of receiving a high-level drop increases. Bungie also announced that the drops you already have will not appear as often in order to increase variety of drops in the new expansion! Bungie announced that The Taken King won’t let you upgrade your legendary armor and your ghost companion will not be voiced by Peter Dinklage. Nolan North will be the new voice of your ghost companion!
“The conflation of gear and character level led to this place where your identity was determined by things outside of your control,” said Luke Smith. “We don’t want to do that.”
Destiny: The Taken King expansion will be released on Tuesday, September 15th!
