[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]ince Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009, only two Disney-themed comics have been released by Marvel, Seekers of the Weird and Figment. Another comic based on the classic Disney attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is coming in March, which will be the third series to be released under the Disney Kingdoms banner from Marvel. Familiar characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck have been notably absent from Disney comics as of late, but IDW Publishing is solving that problem when Uncle Scrooge #1 hits shelves in April.
In addition to Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck #1 will be released in May, with Mickey Mouse #1 coming in June. Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #721 will hit stores in July, and IDW has chosen to continue the numbering of this iconic series which began in 1940, which was most recently published at BOOM! Studios. Although the publisher is renumbering the Uncle Scrooge series, the cover for the first issue will also display #405 in parentheses, as a continuation of the comic’s original 404-issue run. IDW has released its planned schedule for its Disney series through the end of the year, and you can have a look at it below.
One of the most exciting things about the upcoming comics is that each month there will be a variant cover released for each series tied to a specific Disney theme park land or attraction; notably Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Epcot, and my favorite, Haunted Mansion. Some of the themes are still listed as “top secret,” but I’m willing to bet a bottle of rum that one of them will be based on the popular Pirates of the Caribbean attractions. Have a look below at the two regular covers released for Uncle Scrooge #1 while we wait patiently for the Adventureland variant.
